Afranio Affonso Ferreira founded Bahema, a company that sold agricultural machinery, in Salvador, Bahia, in 1953. It later became a Caterpillar representative in the Northeast region.
In the 1980s, demand for Bahema S/A machinery was huge and the Company had surplus cash. Encouraged by the then Chief Financial Officer, Guilherme Affonso Ferreira, it began investing this cash in equity interest in publicly held companies traded on the stock exchange.
This equity investment activity grew and became Bahema’s core business. Unibanco, Manah and Metal Leve, among others, generated exceptional returns of over 50% per year in dollars.
After the merger of Unibanco into Itaú in 2008, the Company carried out successive capital reductions and distributed most of its assets.
In 2016, with the consent of the Board of Directors, a new Executive Board took office at Bahema and began studying investment opportunities in the Elementary and Junior High School sector. In 2017, the Company announced its first acquisitions in the sector, with Escola Balão Vermelho/ Colégio Mangabeiras, in Belo Horizonte/MG, Escola Parque, in Rio de Janeiro/RJ and Escola da Vila, in São Paulo /SP. In 2017, Bahema also invested in Escola Mais, which open in 2018.
